Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Division oversees programs that promote the health, wellness, and safety of department personnel. The division ensures that all field personnel receive an annual physical examination compliant with NFPA 1582. Field personnel also complete the Combat Challenge twice annually to assess their ability to perform job-related physical tasks. Peer fitness trainers provide guidance and individualized support to help members improve their physical fitness and maintain operational readiness.

The division coordinates the management of workplace injuries, including injury reporting, communication with the city’s workers’ compensation vendor, light-duty assignments, and return-to-work testing. Workplace injuries are reviewed quarterly to identify trends and implement measures to reduce risks and improve personnel safety.

The department’s Chaplaincy Program provides spiritual and emotional support, with chaplains available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department also maintains a Peer Support Team composed of trained members who provide emotional support, active listening, and referrals for personnel experiencing work-related stress or personal challenges.

The division’s cancer prevention and early detection initiatives include station-based extractors and drying cabinets for cleaning and drying turnout gear, helping reduce exposure to harmful contaminants from combustion. The department also offers the One Test blood test, which measures biomarkers associated with certain types of cancer and supports further medical evaluation when indicated.
